Abstract: In order to comprehensively evaluate the drought tolerance of the China Stylosanthes germplasm resources, which included the principally promotional cultivars and some imported species. In this study, it was first time by using membership function values as an indicator to study the drought tolerance of 44 selected Stylosanthes germplasms through randomized block design and 4 controlled soil water gradients. The results showed that 8 indexes have been identified to be significantly correlative to water stress, in which the factors with positive correlation to drought tolerance are the relative biomass, the relative plant height, the drought resistant level of leaves, the relative praline , the relative qP, the relative Fv/Fm and the relative Fv’/Fm’; the factors with negative correlation to water stress is the relative conductivity. The results from the comprehensive evaluation have indicated that the 44 selected Stylosanthes germplasms with the strongest drought tolerance are: Stylosanthes guianensis cv. Reyan No.5, S. guianensis USTPRC90139, S. guianensis cv. Endeavour①, S. guianensis cv. Endeavour② and S. guianensis CIAT11369, the weakest are: S. guianensis CPI18750A, S. guianensis TPRC90037②, S. guianensis TPRC90037③, S. guianensis TPRC90028. Cluster analysis based on comprehensive ranker of drought tolerance showed that the 44 Stylosanthes germplasms can be divided into three categories: 10 species of them show highly drought tolerance, 15 species of them are with middlely drought tolerance, 19 species of them are with lowestly drought tolerance,. The results provide the theoretic and practical scientific data for selecting the excellent Sthlosanthes germplasms and breeding materials.
