Abstract: To investigate the effect of alternate flooding with salty and fresh water on improvement of coastal saline soil, a soil column simulation experiment was carried out to study the change of solution electrical conductivity, degree of mineralization and water consumption. The results showed that at the stage of flooding with salty water in treatment S-W, the changes of soil solution conductivity and total dissolved solid of effluent were similar to those in treatment CK. At the followed stage of flooding with fresh water in treatment S-W, the soil solution conductivity in different depths remained stable at the beginning, and then decreased rapidly and finally decreased slowly. Compared with the treatment of CK, the water saving rate of treatment S-W was 25.38%. Leaching by alternate flooding with salty and fresh water could improve the coastal saline soil and its potential of water saving is obvious, but the cost of time is more.
