Abstract: Tabebuia and Handroanthus (Bignoniaceae) are native to central and south America, and widely cultivated in south China because of the high ornamental value, but the provenance of these plants is still unclear. We carried out the morphology and molecular identification of these plants cultivated in south China. The results indicated that: 7 taxa belonged to 4 species from 2 genera (Tabebuia and Handroanthus), including T. rosea, T. aurea, H. impetiginosa and 2 subspecies of H. chrysanthus (H. chrysanthus subsp. chrysanthus and H. chrysanthus subsp. meridionalis). 3 taxa with main difference in petal color could not be distinguished at the molecular level, supporting them as one species. Correct classification of these species will contribute to the hybrid breeding, scientific management and landscape application.
