Introduction and phenophase observation of Begonia in Nanjing Areas

Abstract:

The germplasm resources’ conservation is a key point of Begonia’s research, but few study reports are published in this area so far. With the purpose to provide the theory basis for cultivating popularization of Begonia in the mid-lower reaches of Yangtze River, institute of Botany, Jiangsu Province and Chinese Academy of Sciences introduced twice, totally 91 species (varieties) of Begonia from Kuming Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2010, doing a cultivation trial in Nanjing, recording and analyzing all the related data such as the survival states, morphological characteristics, growth and development, etc. The results proved that most Begonia can survive in good condition and perform an annual growth normally indoor in Nanjing, particularly B. ‘Dragon Wing’ was one of the most superior species that was robust and vigorous and can bloom all the year round, which was actually suitable and valuable for extending and naturalizing in Nanjing.
