Abstract: The paper aims to speed up the cold-tolerance breeding of Corylus heterophylla× Corylus avellana in Shanxi Province, deeply explore Corylus heterophylla× Corylus avellana cold-tolerance resources, provide a theoretical breeding basis for the Corylus heterophylla × Corylus avellanas. 8 main cultivated Corylus heterophylla× Corylus avellana varieties including‘85-28’,‘Davey’,‘Bokehong’,‘B-11’,‘Yuzhui’,‘84-72’, ‘Kuixiang’and‘Liaozhen 3’were used as test materials. Content of soluble protein and sugar of 1 a mature branches of the 8 varieties were tested, and difference analysis was discussed, so as to study relationship between the content of protein, sugar and cold resistance combined with open-field overwintering test. Results showed that during the main low-temperature stage of the dormant period, soluble protein and sugar content of different varieties displayed an increasing tendency, yet varieties with strong cold- resistance had great increasing extent compared with that of varieties with weak cold-resistance, and the content of soluble protein and sugar was positively correlated with cold resistance in Corylus heterophylla× Corylus avellana. The order of cold resistance from strong to weak for the 8 tested varieties was as follows:‘B-11’,‘Davey’,‘85-28’, ‘84-72’,‘Liaozhen 3’,‘Yuzhui’,‘Bokehong’and‘Kuixiang’, which was almost the same as the result of freezing damage investigation of different Corylus heterophylla× Corylus avellana varieties.
