Abstract: In this paper, using data of conventional observation, satellite, radar and ground automatic stations on July 15, 2014 in Tongliao City, Inner Mongolia, local rainstorm process was analyzed and discussed. The results showed that the rainstorm had significant characteristics of strong intensity, small range, short duration; it was local and burst, and difficult to forecast. The local heavy rain mainly caused by the medium and small scale systems, satellite cloud pictures showed a performance of meso γ scale, meso β scale to meso α scale convective clouds, which finally developed to mesoscale convective system (MCS), and the merging, development and strengthening of convective clouds led to the short-time strong rainfall. Radar echo form had a good corresponding relationship to the convective clouds. Strong vertical wind shear and the middle dry cold air intrusion provided favorable conditions for the rainstorm. The surface mesoscale convergence and system were the trigger mechanism of local heavy rain. Therefore, analysis and interpretation of high resolution monitoring products, combining with understanding and grasp of weather situation and characteristics of the surrounding environment can effectively improve the forecast ability of strong local weather.
