Abstract: To estimate the broad-sense heritability of shell length, shell height and shell width, seventeen fullsib families were established with artificial insemination technology by selecting the breeders from the fourth generation selected line of Pinctada martensii. Thirty individuals were randomly sampled from each family at the age of 16 months. Shell length, shell height and shell width of each individual were measured. Broad-sense heritability values for growth traits were estimated based on measured data. Comprehensive evaluation was performed by principal component analysis. The results showed that average shell length, shell height and shell width of the seventeen families were 37.81-54.66 mm, 38.86-54.81 mm and 12.11-16.59 mm, respectively. There were significant differences of morphological characteristics among the seventeen families (P<0.05). Family 11 (F11) had the largest average shell length which was (54.66±4.98) mm and shell height which was (54.81±3.83) mm, while Family 19 displayed the largest average shell width which was (16.59±2.18) mm. The broad-sense heritability value estimated for shell length, shell height and shell width was 56.32%, 58.71% and 42.89%, respectively. Based on comprehensive evaluation, F11 had the highest value, followed by F19, F20, F1, F30, F32, F13, F3, F27, F10, F14, F23, F29, F25, F31, F26 and F28. The present results indicated that there was high genetic variation in the fourth generation selected line of Pinctada martensii.
