Abstract: Bulking sludge used to describe the excessive growth of filamentous bacteria, is a common problem in activated sludge process. It results in looser and less settleable sludge flocs, and in severe cases the operation of the treatment plant can be totally compromised. In this review, the present state of bulking sludge research is evaluated. Bulking sludge can be divided into Filamentous bulking and no-Filamentous bulking. Quality of wastewater, dissolved oxygen, sludge loading, shock loading, operation model and treatment processes are the main affecting factors for bulking sludge. Bulking sludge can be effectively controlled by different control measures, such as temporary control measures, technology design of control measures and technology operation of control measures. Several hypotheses about bulking sludge were formulated in the hope of finding a general explanation for this problem. Unfortunately, none of them led to a definitive solution; moreover, most of the theories still lack experimental verification. Therefore, it is essential to further perfect the current basic theoretical framework to approach and understand bulking sludge and provide a basin theory about controlling the bulking sludge.
