Abstract: Gravel mulch could prevent soil from eroding by water，cut off soil capillary action, and it have an influence on infiltration and evaporation. This paper introduces research results in domestic and overseas. Research results showed that gravel mulch increase or decrease infiltration, and it depend on grain size and position of gravel in the top layer; gravel mulch could reduce evaporation, and it is mainly attributed to particle size, color and mulch thickness. Some foreign scholars described the mechanism of infiltration and evaporation under gravel mulch by quantitative model. Based on laboratory experiments under controlled conditions, it has difficulty for practical use. Thus, further research will be necessary for exact parameterization.
