Abstract: Sucrose is the major form of carbohydrate transported in most higher plants. It can be cleaved to fructose and glucose. Fructose is probably then phosphorylated by fructokinase in order to establish sink tissues and enhance sink strength. Fructokinase also regulates the metabolism, growth and development as the sugar sensing and signalling element. Thus, fructokinase plays a crucial role in plant sink tissues. In this paper,we review the advances in the field of fructokinase concerning its gene cloning, gene expression, phylogenesis, structure, location and major physiological functions.
