Abstract: A low cost and fine effect substrate was selected for plug transplant of cucumber. The materials of the substrate were wheat straw, clay and puffing chicken manure, which proportion in volume ratio was wheat straw: clay: puffing chicken manure = 4.8~4.5 : 3.2~3 : 2~2.5. The plug seedlings grew uniform and vigorous, the roots of the plug seedlings and the substrate formed a good root ball using the substrate. Compared with peat moss and vermiculite, the most commonly used media, the substrate for plug transplant was perfect for expending in the vegetable production area with the advantage of easy collection, low cost of raw materials，more vigorous and no fertilizer application in the process of seedlings period.
