Effect of Planting Salt-tolerant Plants on Water-soluble Salt in Coastal Saline Soil

Abstract:

Field experiment combined with laboratory analysis was conducted to investigate the effect of salt-tolerant plants in the period of growing season on the water-soluble salt in coastal saline soil. The conductivity meter method and glass electrode method were used to determine the conductivity and the value of pH in soil, respectively. The results showed that four salt-tolerant plants treatments had obvious function of restraining salt accumulation in surface layer. Tamarix chinensis had best effects on restraining the accumulation of soil salinity in surface layer and 0-80 cm layers. The reduced water-soluble salt sequence was T3>T1>T2>T4 on 16th August, 2010. The reduced salt percentage in surface layer which compared with comparison treatment was 72.11%, 52.16%, 40.90%, 23.63%, respectively. The trend of water-soluble salt percentage in surface layer changed from decline to rise with increasing treated time. The reduced water-soluble salt sequence was T3>T2>T1>T4 on 17th December, 2010. The reduced salt percentage in surface layer which compared with comparison treatment was 78.26%, 71.91%, 48.79%, 40.09%, respectively. Although pH in soil increased than that of comparison treatment, planting salt-tolerant plants could effectively restraint the accumulation of soil salinity. Therefore, it should take potential soil alkalization seriously on planting salt-tolerant plants.
