Abstract: In order to utilize sulfate-reducing method on the treatment of heavy metal wastewater and organic wastewater containing sulfate, sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) were enriched from the long-term polluted sewer in Fengyang, and their removing sulfate abilities were studied in the different conditions, such as: sulfur source, temperature, pH value, salinity, oxygen and the concentration of Fe2+ . The results showed that, CH3CHOHCOONa could be used as a carbon source to reduce sulfate and thiosulfate, and sulfite could not be reduced. The optimum conditions for SRB growth were found to be at 36℃, pH 7.5. SRB were able to grow in the NaCl concentration of 3%, meanwhile, their removing sulfate abilities was the best in facultative anaerobic; the rate of sulfate reducing was increasing with the increased Fe2+ concentration. The rate of sulfate reducing would reach above 95% after thirty hours when SRB were inoculated by 10% and the concentration of FeSO4 was 2000 mg/L.
