Abstract: Maize straw returning to the field plus rotary tillage before sowing winter wheat was the main model of winter wheat planting in Hebei Province. This planting model created unfavourable growing condition to the seedings of winter wheat. Field experiment was conducted to study the effects of different sowing practices on the yield of winter in Gaocheng City in Hebei Province. Three treatments were set up: no irrigation before sowing (CK), irrigation before sowing, no irrigation before sowing with rolling after sowing. The yield of the three treatments was in the order of irrigation before sowing > no irrigation before sowing with rolling after sowing > no irrigation before sowing. The yield under irrigation before sowing and no irrigation before sowing with rolling after sowing treatments were significant increased by 6.9% and 6.0% compared that of CK (P<0.01). No irrigation before sowing with rolling after sowing treatment could save the irrigation of pre-sowing and it could be extended as a water-saving practices in this region.
