Abstract: Mycosphaerella graminicola is one of the most economically important pathogen of wheat, and normally used as a mode pathogen of Dothideales. Its biotrophic and necrotrophic characters during the infection development determined the complexity of the infection and pathogenic mechanisms. So far, lots of studies on its pathogenic mechanisms have been reported in abroad, especially in Europe, but few in China. In this paper, the advances on the pathogen infection and pathogenic mechanisms were summarized from the six aspects of the observation of infection process, main factors related to the pathogen infection, the role of toxins, identification and functional analysis of pathogenic genes, genomics and functional genomics, and plant resistant reaction during the infection. Based on the previous studies, a relevant hypothetical diagram was pointed out and several future research directions in the area were suggested. These provided an orientation for the future studies on the pathogenic mechanism and host-pathogen interaction of M. graminicola in China.
