Breeding Season Behavior Ethogram and PAE Coding System of Eurasian Spoonbill (Platalea leucorodia)

Abstract

Abstract: The behavior of Eurasian spoonbill (Platalea leucorodia) was studied to investigate its behavior and to establish its ethogram and PAE (posture, act and environment) coding system in breeding season at Qixinghe Nature Reserve by focal animal sampling and all occurrence recording methods. Ten kinds of posture, 52 action and 92 behavior were distinguished and recorded. The behavior was divided into 16 types according to its function and various kinds of behavior was corresponded with gender, age and season in PAE coding system. The results showed there was no big difference between male and female except male shows during breeding and the behavior of neatlings was simple. Reproductive behavior and some individual behavior, such as thermoregulation behavior, communication behavior, miscellaneous behavior, showed sasonal characteristics.
