Abstract: Sweet potato leaf curl disease is the most devastating virus diseases to sweet potato production around the world. The disease has been spreading widely in sweet potato growing areas in the United States, Spain, Brazil, China, Japan, Korea and South Africa. Sweet potato leaf curl virus (SPLCV) is one of the main pathogens which belongs to the monopartite begomovirus (genus Begomovirus, family Geminivirade), which only possessing the DNA-A genomic component. SPLCV is transmitted by Bemisia tabaci in a persistent manner and grafting. In China, SPLCV was firstly isolated from the sweet potato in Dalian City of Liaoning Province in 2006, after then, SPLCV was isolated from sweet potato, Ipomoea purpurea and Ipomoea indica in Fujian, Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Yunnan Provinces. Based on the literatures at home and abroad, the occurrence, distribution, molecular characteristics, epidemiology of SPLCV were summarized, meanwhile, the problems were also pointed out and discussed. The threat of SPLCV on sweet potato production was aggravating around the world. The study will provide the basis for the prevention and control of SPLCV.
