Abstract: Waterlogging is one of the main abiotic stresses in nature, and cotton is constantly exposed to waterlogging which severely restrict cotton planting acreage and lint yield. In order to study the harmful effects of waterlogging on the growth and development of cotton, we summarized present situation and progress of studies on waterlogging stress in terms of morphological parameters, physiological traits and phytohormone variation, and then analyzed cotton physiological mechanisms under waterlogging stress, including adaptive changes of cotton aerenchyma formation and enzymes metabolisms, and lastly gave several advices on waterlogging identification methods, evaluating indicators and varieties breeding for further study.
