Abstract: Cross breeding is a very important way of breeding new cultivars and is widely used for gathering fine traits together quickly. Currently, seeds of Salvia splendens in China depend largely on import. However, some of the imported cultivars have bad acclimatization. Now it is urgent to breed new species that could adapt to our climate well and have our own intellectual property. For this, the paper analyzed and summarized four aspects of the key factors in cross breeding of Salvia splendens, which are reproduction biology, stigma receptivity, the best pollination time and the reciprocal hybrid. It could provide useful information and improve the efficiency of hybrid breeding of Salvia splendens in the future.
