Abstract: In order to improve the current situation of low bear rate and tree potential recession of closing, high density citrus ‘Gongchuan’ orchard. During 2009-2012, we investigated the effects of intermediate cuttings on disease resistance, fruit development and flavor quality of ‘Gongchuan’ in different growth stages in an over 20-year-old airtight orchard with 3m×3m planting density in Shanghai, Chongming island. The results showed that the suitable intermediate cuttings formed proper planting density, together with appropriate field management can fundamentally improve yield and quality, as well as the resin disease resistance. Furthermore, high performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) determination of content and component soluble sugar and organic acid were also performed and we found that intermediate cuttings had remarkable effect on increasing the concentrations of fruit sucrose and glucose concentrations, which were 50.9% and 24.8% higher than the control (CK) respectively in October 2011. However, the concentrations of several main organic acids showed no significant difference between treatment and CK. Therefore, we suggested that intermediate cuttings can not only improve the yield, but also increase fruit sugar acid ratio as well as fruit quality. All of above concluded that intermediate cutting is an effective method for dense orchard modification.
