Abstract: Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP) is one of the main factors that influence the operation of subsurface wastewater infiltration system (SWIS). It also has a crucially effect on treatment efficiency and the environment of microbial. This paper briefly describes the effects of ORP on organics removal, nitrogen and phosphorus removal and the microbial activity in the SWIS. Measures which are commonly used to improve ORP, such as flooding and drying alternate, constituting matrix, diffluent ratio, oxygen recovery by inflow pipes, roots of plants, soil animal activity and ventilation pipes, are analyzed. The analysis shows that all measures have the engineering applicability. With further research, a series of improvement measures will be applied in combination. The development of new matrix materials will enrich connotation of SWIS theory and broaden the application of engineering practice. Process operation will be more flexible.
