Abstract: In order to provide scientific basis for the rational use of agricultural climate resource and distribution of cotton production, the author made a comprehensive evaluation of cotton cultivation suitability in counties around Tarim River Basin and made reasonable regionalization by analyzing the results of evaluation and considering the actual situation in Xinjiang cotton production. Based on the climate data from 23 meteorological stations in Tarim River Basin during 1993—2012, suitability evaluation of cotton planting in Tarim River Basin was conducted with the method of DTOPSIS. On this basis, the author researched the regionalization of cotton planting in Tarim River Basin taking into account water potential index of each city and county. Zoning results showed that the most suitable region for cotton planting was the main stream area, the suitable region included tributaries and middle reaches areas, the sub- suitable region included downstream and border areas, and the unsuitable region included mountain area with higher elevation of Tarim River Basin. There was little difference in average temperature and sunshine hour in cotton planting regions among all counties except individual counties. Thus, irrigation condition was the main impact factor on cotton planting suitability in each county.
