Abstract: Adding antibiotics to TMR can be an effective decay control method. However, long-term use of antibiotics can produce animal drug residues and other issues. Oregano essential oil is a kind of natural essential oil which has strong antibacterial effect without chemical poison, and can be used as feed additives. This experiment was designed to study the effect of oregano essential oil on inhibiting mold, bacteria and coliform in TMR. And the effects of pH and temperature on the inhibitory effect of oregano essential oil were also analyzed. Oregano essential oil was added to TMR of Holstein cows (about 650 kg). The number of mold and bacteria colonies in TMR was counted using plate colony-counting method. Most probable number of coliforms was detected by using GB bile lactose fermentation. The results showed that oregano essential oil could inhibit mold, bacteria and coliforms in TMR and the difference was significant (P<0.05), and could be used as feed additive to improve the freshness of TMR.
