Abstract: The paper aims to investigate the characteristics of unusual track and strength of severe tropical storm Fung- wong (1416), as well as the rainfall and wind caused by it in 2014. By analyzing the weather environmental fields around Fung-wong and diagnosing its physical quantities, the path variation and strength change as well as structure characteristics were studied. Results showed that: Fung-wong was influenced by the change of subtropical high and steering flow, moved along the subtropical high periphery, travelled westward first, then headed northward and moved eastward out to the sea finally. The deep steering flow played a good role in indication. In strength aspect, Fung-wong owned a small size, the previous sea temperature was low so as to reduce the heat capacity level, herein, strength of Fung-wong could not be enhanced by these conditions. Meanwhile, the structure of Fung-wong was asymmetric by studying the wind filed characteristics. Fung-wong was weakened after the boost of vertical wind shear, its structure was also broken after several landings. Overall, Fung- wong tracked eastward with a week strength to make limited effect. The vapor transport condition was unfavorable with no cooperation of the cold air, and therefore the rainfall on the north bank of Tai Lake was mainly moderate, the wind was concentrated around Fung-wong’ s center circulation. The effect caused by Fung-wong was limited.
