Abstract: The study aims to investigate the role of abscisic acid in senescence of tree peony cut flower and provide a theoretical basis for the development of preservation technology. The tree peony cut flower ‘Ruhua Siyu’ which produced ethylene in a like climacteric type was taken as material to investigate the influence of ABA and sodium tungstate (ABA biosynthesis inhibitor) on flower opening index, diameter increasing rate, vase life, best viewing period, ABA contents and endogenous ethylene production of petals during vase period. The results showed that the senescence process was hastened, vase life and best viewing period were shortened by exogenous ABA treatment. Significant and positive relationship was found between ABA contents and endogenous ethylene production of petals. The ABA peak of petals preceded the endogenous ethylene peak all the time. ABA may indirectly hasten the senescence process of cut tree peony flower by inducing great ethylene production.
