Abstract: This paper studied the effects of compaction to soil physical property of new city green space. Taking the new park of Xi’an Botanical Garden to be the object of research, the authors divided the garden into districts according to differences soil compaction degree and surface vegetation. Soil samples were collected from different layers in different districts to determine the soil bulk density, pore status and moisture constant. The results showed that the occurrence rules of soil of various layers changed and soil degradation appeared with the increase of compaction degree. The soil bulk density was on the high side in the study districts and the average value was 1.52 g/cm3. The soil total porosity (44.71%), aeration porosity (12.81%), soil water content (15.46%), field capacity (20.77%) and soil saturated water conductivity (20.7 mm/h) were obviously low. Soil bulk density was significantly and negatively correlated with total porosity, air porosity and field capacity, natural moisture content, saturated hydraulic conductivity. Aeration porosity was significantly and positively correlated with saturated hydraulic conductivity, natural water content, and field capacity. Compaction effects on soil physical property of each layer were surface soil> shallow soil> deep soil. The compaction of people trample only affected the surface soil.
