Abstract: In order to effectively reduce disaster loss caused by fog and haze, provide important basis for accurate prediction of fog and haze, this paper used ground meteorological observation data from 1981 to 2014 of Rizhao, analyzed and studied the climate change characteristics and the grade distribution of fog and haze. Preliminary results showed that on the whole, days of fog and haze in Rizhao had a rising trend in the nearly 34 years, but the fog days decreased significantly after 2000 and haze days began to increase at the same time. The distribution of haze days in Rizhao was more in the spring and winter, but less in the fall and summer, and mainly slight haze. However, the distribution characteristic of fog days presented coastal characteristics. Fog was more in the spring and summer, but less in the fall and winter, and mainly thick fog. The main reason was that prevailing southeast wind in spring and summer was very favorable for the formation and maintaining of coastal fog.
