Application of Biotechnology to Breeding of Asparagus officinalis L.

Abstract: The aim was to provide a reference and theoretical basis for genetic breeding work of Asparagus in the future. This paper reviewed the advances in the past few decades on the application of biotechnology to Asparagus breeding, including tissue culture, anther culture, microspore culture, protoplast culture, polyploidy induction, molecular marker technique and genetic transformation. The review highlighted the role and future directions of applying biotechnology to Asparagus breeding, and analyzed existing problems in such applications. In the end, according to the biological characteristics of Asparagus and the demand of Asparagus industry, the research trend on biotechnology breeding of Asparagus was also discussed.
