Abstract: In order to study the original plants of ‘celery’ in Chinese traditional culture and make clear the classification of ‘celery’, the names of ‘celery’ related plants in ancient books and records were sorted out, ‘celery’ plants were studied in combining with the modern related monoid knowledge by the method of comparative morphology. The results showed that (1) there were 15 names related to ‘celery’ recorded in the historical literatures in all ages, 9 of them were given the scientific name; (2) the authors first put forward that the feature of root color was paid more attention when ancestors knew ‘celery’, indicating that the ancestors knowledge on ‘celery’ was deeply influenced by rare medical plant ‘ginseng’ in Umbellales in modern plant classification system; (3) volumes of ‘celery’ seeds were so small that they might be ignored by Chinese ancestors when they observed and described such plants.
