Abstract: The shape, type and distribution of tarsal sensilla of the Asian longhorned beetle [Anoplophora glabripennis (Motschulsky)] (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) were observed and described in order to understand their effects on feeding and mating behaviors. The ultrastructure of tarsal sensilla of both female and male adult A. glabripennis was observed with scanning electron microscope. The results showed that there were 3 types of sensilla in adult tarsi which were sensilla trichodea (2 subtypes), sensilla chaetica (3 subtypes), and sensilla basiconica. Though the sensilla’s type and sex distribution were similar, tarsi length and the amount of sensilla showed dimorphism as tarsi length of the female was longer than that of the male and the amount of sensilla on tarsi and claws of the female was much more than that of the male. Studying the type, shape and distribution of these sensilla and their functions with consideration to feeding behavior would be helpful to understand the chemical communication mechanism of the longhorned beetles.
