Abstract: Prohibitins (PHBs, antiproliferative protein genes) is also known as the inhibitor gene. The study aims to understand PHBs gene classification, structure and location, as well the gene function. The authors summarized research progresses on PHBs from gene classification and structure, the PHB protein structure and size, gene subcellular localization, and its functions on controlling plant growth and development and mitochondrial formation, as well as its effects on stresses. It indicated that the plant PHBs genes not only controlled the plant growth and development, but also were a cluster of important genes that involved in various stress responses. Although research has been carried out worldwide on PHB functions of improving crop resistance to stress, which provides a basis for plant resistance breeding, it still needs further study.
