The Influence of Cluster Exposure on Wine Grape Quality: A Review

Abstract: Many factors influence the grape berry quality, for specific wine- producing regions, under the premise of certain relatively situation of climate, soil and varieties, it is particularly important to improve the berry quality through the change of cultivation techniques. In this review, we outline the general situation of the influence of cluster exposure, a new technology of vineyard manages, which attracts wide attention from foreign and domestic scholars due to its simple operation, high efficiency and mechanization. The technology can increase the quality of wine grape, including the content of phenolic, such as the total phenol, anthocyanins, tannin and so forth; and volatile aroma compounds, in particularly, the concentration of the methoxypyrazines in grapes. In addition, we summarize the influence of cluster exposure on the production regulation and the decrease of cluster compactness to reduce the incidence of vine and berry disease. Furthermore, we briefly discuss the application and developing direction of the technology under the background of rural labor force decreasing, rising labor cost, and the requirement of grape industry in China for intensification, mechanization and simplification.
