Abstract: The paper aims to promote and demonstrate the shallow subsurface drip irrigation of alfalfa, and optimize its scheme for alfalfa production with superior quality and high yield. We established a mathematical model, simulated the infiltration characteristics under different buried depths and separation distances of underground drip irrigation in field by using the HYDRUS-2D model, and conducted the field experiment for verification and comparative analysis of the simulation results. The results showed that: the numerical simulation with HYDRUS- 2D was reliable, and it was a suitable method to simulate the soil moisture movement in alfalfa field; higher yield was obtained with buried depth of 5 cm and 20 cm, and separation distance of 60 cm. As the yield is similar between the buried depth of 5 cm and 20 cm, and subsurface drip irrigation is easy to be conducted with the depth of 5 cm, it is suggested that the layout of buried depth of 5 cm and separation distance of 60 cm should be taken in this area.
