Abstract: To investigate the purification capacity of indoor ornamental plant Epipremnum aureum on cigarette smoke and its growth and physiological responses, and provide a basis for prevention and control of cigarette smoke pollution, cigarette smoking way of mankind was imitated in this study, two cigarettes were injected into a sealed or interval ventilated glass capsule with length, width and height all of 60 cm, and Epipremnum aureum was put into the capsule. CO and PM2.5 concentrations during 72 h were measured, changes of phenotypes were observed and the physiological indexes in leaves were determined. The results showed that: E. aureum could effectively absorb CO and PM2.5 produced by cigarette smoke and purify the air. Plant growth was affected by cigarette smoke treatments to some degree. Watery plaque spots were appeared in leaves and the whole leaves became yellow with the time prolonging. Levels of reactive oxygen species (including superoxide anion and hydrogen peroxide) in leaves were significantly increased, resulting in aggravation of membrane lipid peroxidation and the increase of malondialdehyde content. The plant triggered antioxidant enzymes system to eliminate reactive oxygen species in time; while, as the time went on, the resistance became weakened. Ventilation effectively accelerated air flow and alleviated the cigarette smoke toxicity to plants. Therefore, we suggest E. aureum should be put in smoking area and ventilating sometimes, thus it will decrease the risk caused by cigarette smoke pollution.
