Abstract: Diversity of planting mode is one of the main features of rice production in China. It plays important roles in coping with variable planting environment, improving the comprehensive productivity of rice and ensuring national food security. In order to reveal the growth and high-yield formation characteristics of early rice under different planting modes, this paper elaborated the current situation of early rice production and development of planting mode in China, and summarized the effects of different planting modes on root growth, nutrient absorption, dry matter accumulation, tiller dynamics, growth duration, yield and quality formation, as well as economic and ecological efficiency in early rice. It is proposed that the researches on the intrinsic mechanism of development process in early rice, the composition and species diversity of weed communities in paddy fields, and the characteristics of soil mineral nutrient loss based on different planting modes are valuable subjects.
