Abstract: This paper reports the microstructure of feathers of Ibidorhyncha struthersii and Himantopus himantopus in different parts of body with SEM. The results show that remiges, rectrices and contour feathers are mainly composed of hooked barbules and nonhooked barbules, the hooked barbules and the nonhooked barbules are engaged to form a flexible and strong vane to reduce the air resistance. The number of hamuli, cilia, ventral teeth is constant in remiges, rectrices and contour feathers. It could be used as a standard to distinguish different families. The verrucous protuberance in nonhooked barbules is special, its variation is stable, so it could be used with the length of internode as a standard to distinguish different genera in the same family.
