Diversity and Complexity of Plant Heat Shock Transcription Factor Family: Research Progress

Abstract: Plant heat shock transcription factor (Hsf), as a kind of crucial regulators in network regulation, can respond to multiple biological stresses and abiotic stresses, and confer various tolerances to plants. Hsf research in plant mainly focuses on model plant, the most research objectives are class A members. The researches on crop Hsf families are relatively lagging, and gradually develop to be hot fields in recent years. In this paper, the structure, classification, functional diversity and regular mechanism of Hsf in plant are reviewed. It emphatically points out that the pleiotropic roles of plant Hsf could not only benefit the adaptation to single stress environment, but also enable plants to easily adapt to the cross stress environments which are more similar to natural environment, so Hsfs are a kind of ideal genes for crop genetic improvement of stress tolerances. In future, based on fully understanding of classification and characteristics of crop Hsf families, it is necessary to strengthen the regulatory functions of Hsf to various adversities and common stresses, and explain the specificity of spatial and temporal expression and network regulation mechanism of Hsf families. At the same time, major aspects and technological difficulties in the deep research are discussed in this review.
