Abstract: Beckmannia, Alopecurus and Phleum are common and widespread genera of Poaceae subfamily Pooideae. The morphological characteristics of caryopsis of 6 species from Beckmannia, Alopecurus and Phleum including in China were observed by using scanning electron microscopy after being coated with gold in a sputter coater in order to infer the taxonomic significance of caryopsis micro- morphological characteristics. The results showed that: (1) the caryopsis micromorphological features of Beckmannia, Alopecurus and Phleum were 1-2 mm long, fusiform or oval shape, compressed dorsal abdomen or not, concave or convex abdomen, round or lanceolate to linear hilium shape, reticular or strip ornamentation; (2) the caryopsis characters were analyzed by PAUP using UPGMA methods; in the tree, Beckmannia and Alopecurus clustered together, Phleum formed another branch. The caryopsis micromorphological evidences suggest that Beckmannia and Alopecurus have a closer relationship.
