Abstract: In order to establish the combining ability performance of kernel volume of waxy corn lines and the inheritance of kernel volume among the generations, and guide large kernel hybrid combinations’ matching and inbred lines improvements, ten waxy corn lines, including the parents of commercial varieties and inbred lines bred by us, were used as materials in this study. By using complete diallel cross design, hybridized combinations were made and planted in the randomized block field. After maturity and drying, the kernel volume was measured and data was handled by using Griffing IV method to study the inheritance of kernel volume among hybrid combinations. The results showed that general combining ability (GCA) of kernel volume had a significant difference between parents, and the GCA of S10 was the best combination while the GCA of S6 was the lowest one. Specific combining ability (SCA) of kernel volume had a significant difference between the combinations. The heritability of kernel volume was low (hn2=12.55%), and dominant effect (VD=1.5398) was greater than additive effect (VA=0.7949) among genetic effects. Therefore, for selecting kernel volume traits in breeding process, inbred lines should be selected in later generations, and combinations should be directly selected by considering both kernel volume performance and breeding goals.
