Effect of Plastic Film Mulching on Spring-Cultivated Spinach

Abstract: Plastic film mulching is widely used in the production of many horticultural crops, but there is still no report on its application in spring spinach cultivation. In order to provide theoretical foundation for the popularization and application of plastic film mulching on spring-cultivated spinach, the authors studied the effect of plastic film mulching on germination, growth, yield and quality of hybrid round-leaf spinach and ‘Meimei’ spinach. The results showed that plastic film mulching significantly influenced the germinating time and the early growth of spinach, the germinating time decreased by more than 7 days, and all appearance indexes increased significantly. But all the indexes were not significantly different from that of CK in harvest time. Uncovering in time was the key measure to fulfill the effect of plastic film mulching. After filming, the protein and soluble sugar content of hybrid round-leaf spinach increased significantly, and other nutrient contents had no significant difference from that of CK. Plastic film mulching could promote the growth of spring-cultivated spinach and increase yield and quality.
