Abstract: A pot experiment and field trials were conducted to study on nitrogen release dynamics of a controlled-release fertilizer and its effects on quality and yield of leafy vegetables. It was observed that BCRF treatment resulted in significant higher soil NH4-N content than other treatments during whole growth period of flowering Chinese cabbage (FCC). On the other hand, soil NO3-N content of BCRF was evidently lower than that of BVSF in early and medium growth stages, and also lower than that of SVSF in late stage. In addition to meeting the demand for nitrogen nutrition of major leafy vegetables such as FCC in Guangdong, BCRF stably increased commercial yields and improved vegetable quality through increasing concentrations of vitamin C and soluble sugar, meanwhile decreasing concentration of nitrate in the products.
