The Research Progress on Cold-Resistance Characteristics from Australia Alfalfa Resources

Abstract

Abstract: The growth of alfalfa cultivars is less durable under an unfavorable environment condition in Europe and the United State. It is very important to develop the varieties adapted to adverse environment in Australia. The new hybrids were developed through the cross-breeding using the best introduced lines and the collections in Australia. Hybrids would be evaluated under a variety of soil types and different cold climatic regions. Select the best generations to be pre-foundation seeds. The performance about morphology，physiology and biochemistry under low temperature stress were summarized. The relationship between Fall-dormancy and the cold-tolerance was exhibited, and research progress in gene engineering of alfalfa cold- tolerance is reported.
