Application of Biotechnology on the Classification of Longhorn Beetles (Coleoptera, Cerambycidae)

Abstract

Abstract: The classification system of longhorn beetles was mainly based on morphological characters. Recently, biotechnology especially molecular biological technology had been applied in the classification of longhorn beetles. Here, electrophoretic analysis of isozyme, molecular markers RAPD, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and nucleotide sequence analysis on the study of longhorn beetles were reviewed. These methods had been used in identification of close relative species, phylogeny of species or higher taxa, population genetic variation and speciation, molecular evolution and biogeography of longhorn beetles. Meanwhile, the research prospects of molecular biological technology of longhorn beetles were discussed.
