Abstract: The suitable wide and narrow row distance and planting density of a newly bred maize hybrid ‘Hongda 8’ was determined by experiments with 6 wide and narrow row treatments under 5 planting densities. Results showed that the optimal planting density of ‘Hongda 8’ varied according to the wide and narrow rows deployment. Comprehensively, the optimal planting density of ‘Hongda 8’ was among 79,500-91,500 plants/hm2. Under a certain planting density level, maize yield varied with the wide and narrow row distance and the highest yield was realized when the wide row distance and narrow row distance reached 80 cm and 40 cm, respectively. Cultivating ‘Hongda 8’ with alternative wide and narrow rows could increase the yield when the crop was planted at a high density. The optimal planting stratedy for ‘Hongda 8’ was 80 cm and 40 cm for the wide and narrow rows alternatively under a planting density of 79,500 plants/hm2 which could lead to a maize production of 9,950 kg/hm2.
