Abstract:

A total of sixty broilers aged 1 day were randomly divided into five groups. The first group was control group fed with basal diet, the second, third and forth were the experimental groups fed with diets containing 0.2, 0.5, and 1.0 mg?kg-1 selenium by supplying the selenium-enriched beer yeast, the fifth group fed with diets containing beer yeast. The body weight, the whole-blood glutathione pereoxidase (GSH-Px) activity, plasma superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and total oxidation capacity (T-AOC) value were detected on days 14 and 28. The results showed that body weight of these groups was not different on days 14 and 21, but on days 28, there was a significant difference between the 2nd, 3rd group and the 1st group. The whole-blood GSH-Px activity, plasma SOD activity and T-AOC value in the experimental groups were significantly or more significantly higher than those of the 1st and 5th group. It is concluded that the selenium-enriched beer yeast, which could increase the activity of GSH-Px and SOD, T-AOC value, is a better source of Se for broiler.
