Effects of Furfural Residue Addition on Composting of Garden Waste

Abstract:

In order to speed up maturity of the garden waste composting, moreover to reduce the pollution of environment and realize the resource recycling, the experiment were conducted by using mixtures of spring garden waste and dry chicken manure to study the effects of furfural residue on composting process in Xiangshan Park of Beijing in May 2011. The author researched on the dynamical changes of temperature, the contents of total-nitrogen, C/N ratio, plant inhibited material in the composting process and the compost qualities of the different composting treatments. The results showed that in the treatment of garden waste composting without furfural residue, the highest temperature was 46℃, GI was 73%, it did not reach the stage of maturity; In the treatment with furfural residue, the time of reaching the highest temperature was 3 days and the sustaining of high temperature decomposing was 14 days. Compared with the garden waste composting treatment, with proper ratio of dry chicken manure, the time of reaching the highest temperature shortened by 2 days and the sustaining of high temperature extended by 4 days. Compared with the treatment 1 and treatment 2, the content of total-N in the treatment 3 improved by 12.4% and 36%, respectively. The GI was 73%, 87% and 90%, respectively until the end of composting. At the maturity, it was found that the composting treatment with furfural residue, had higher contents of available nitrogen, available phosphorus, available potassium, higher total porosity and water-holding porosity, and lower the bulk density, compared with the garden waste treatment and the garden waste compost treatment with the prosper ratio of dry chicken manure, the treatment with furfural residue could improve the compost quality significantly.
