Analysis on the Basic Trend and Characteristics of World Potatoes Production

Abstract: Potatoes is the world's fourth largest food crop, widely planted in the world, about 160 countries growing potatoes. Concerned about the development of world potato production is favorable to China's potato industry. This paper analyzed the world and regional potatoes production and its historical evolution from perspective of world potatoes production, and made some basic judgments. The results showed that: world potatoes was intensively distributed in three zones, which were the high mountain zone, lowland tropical zone, and temperate zone. There were two remarkable latitude bands, which were 23°N-34°N and 44°N-58°N, accounting for 70% of total potato area. Potatoes was widely cultivated in the world, but production differs from country to country. World potatoes main producing area is transferring from the developed countries to the developing countries. World potato production pattern is undergoing huge changes.
