Analysis of the Growth and Photosynthetic Characteristics of the Superior Clones in Lagerstroemia indica

Abstract: By evaluating the growth and photosynthetic characteristics of superior clones of Lagerstroemia indica, the research aims to provide a theoretical basis for the rational allocation and scientific planting. 5 superior clones of Lagerstroemia indica, which were from the introduction and breeding, were used as the experimental materials. By measuring the relevant characteristics, the authors compared the difference of the growth and photosynthetic characteristics between the five clones of Lagerstroemia indica. The result showed that there were highly significant differences in the growth and photosynthetic characteristics among 5 superior clones. The minimum value of the basal diameter, leaf length, leaf width, branch length, branch diameter, chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b were 2.41 cm, 6.13 cm, 3.75 cm, 0.72 m, 0.95 cm, 0.95 mg/g and 0.24 mg/g, respectively. The values of the fast- growing Lagerstroemia indica were more prominent in basal diameter (4.86 cm), leaf length (9.99 cm), leaf width (6.13 cm), branch length (1.77 m), branch basal diameter (1.80 cm), chlorophyll a (1.68 mg/g) and chlorophyll b (0.49 mg/g). The light saturation points (LSP) were more than 1672.05μmol/(m2·s) and the light compensation points (LCP) were from 20μmol/(m2·s) to 31μmol/(m2·s) in the 5 superior clones, the sequence of the maximum net photosynthetic rate (Pnmax) was‘Ewei No.2’ [25.43μmol/(m2·s)]>‘Susheng Ziwei’[19.67μmol/(m2·s)]>‘Ewei No.4’[18.38μmol/(m2·s)]>‘Ewei No.1’[16.64μmol/(m2·s)]>‘Ewei No.5’[11.17μmol/(m2·s)]. Correlation analysis showed that the shade tolerance could be improved if the clones had large leaves and high chlorophyll content, the dark respiration rate of leaves had a significantly influence on diameter. According to the growth and photosynthetic characteristics, combined with the aim of nurturing, the 5 superior clones should be configured reasonably in practical cultivation.
