Research Progresses of Rural Regional-System Degradation

Abstract

Abstract: While rural residents moved to city with rapid urbanization, numerous village houses were idled or abandoned, which was called village‘hollowing’. The essence of villages hollowing was rural regional-system degradation (RRSD) characterized by plummeted population, economic recession and landscape degeneration. This paper defined RRSD, summarized the achievements of characteristics, causes, impacts, land consolidations and research methods and concluded that study area should be expanded, research vision was narrow, comprehensive research methods were infrequent, 3S technology application was insufficient and countermeasures were not systematic. Finally, some research focuses, such as case study on mountainous area, coupling mechanism between villages hollowing and RRSD, reconstruction strategies of degraded rural regional system, interdisciplinary research and systems integration were proposed.
