Abstract: To determine a reasonable application rate of coated urea for cucumber seedling fertilization, taking conventional substrate, peat: vermiculite (2:1), as seedling medium, seedling growth, nutrients uptake and nitrogen (N) balance were tested in this study during cucumber nursery period with different application rate of coated urea. The results showed that coated urea application rate at 125-375 mg N per plant could coordinate the growth of shoot and root of cucumber seedlings, and improve phosphorus and potassium uptake. Meanwhile, residue of 90.5-250.3 mg N per plant was found in the substrate at transplanting time, among them, the coated N accounted for 75.4%-82.3%, and could realize fertilized-transplanting. 31.9-121.5 mg N per pot apparent N losses occurred during nursery period.
